Mellong

Not necessarily an impressive mountain, but this is a very interesting walk through a unique part of the Wollemi. Mellong Swamp is based on alluvial sands formed in the last few million years, which gives it a coastal feel very different from the surrounding sandstone bush. The area is know for its unique plant and bird life.

Driving directions

From the Colo River bridge, drive north along Putty Road for 51km. There is a firetrail on the left called Kings Waterhole Trail. The entrance is small and just before a sign saying "Stoney Water Hole". Find a place to park on the roadside.

Directions to the summit

1. Follow Kings Waterhole Trail for 9km to the end of the trail. The trail is very sandy and flat, reminiscent of trails found in coastal National Parks.

2. There is a small ford upstream of a billabong where you can cross Mellong Creek. Head NW around 400m across the river flat till you reach the hill.

3. There is a steep initial climb through cycads.

4. At the top you follow a narrow ridge to the NW. There are great views from both sides of the ridge. Toward the east, you can see the profiles of Mount Yengo and Mount Wareng, and Mount Warrawalong further south.

5. Eventually you reach the top of the spur where the vegetation thickens somewhat. For the best views, I recommend a short detour to the north.

6. To find the views, head north for around 250m, then head downhill to the NW for 200m. There is a cliffline with great views to the north and to the west.

7. From 5, head south for 500m. The highest point is a large rock platform at the SE corner of the summit.
